DRAFT Question 1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

  1. 1) Slide 1: You say in about your 3rd paragraph ..appealing to the fear…(to) …..possible fate. Could you delete this paragraph as it is unfocused. . I think it would be more coherent if you said something like……the audience is positioned with the trapped female and may be reminded of the infamous crime in Austria…..Cellar in Austria where Josef Fritzl kept his daughter as his sex slave for 24 years filled with 200 tons of cement. Thus the audience may begin to make connections between a seemingly respectable middle aged man who is in fact some kind of monster. The crime against Elisabeth Fritzl who was held captive in the cellar in Austria from the age of 18 by her father. . You could Google this story and reference it to l strengthen your response.

    2) Slide 1: You are tending not to focus on the question. You need to begin each section with….I used the convention of the seemingly respectable man who is in fact dangerous and a misogynist. For example Harry Lime in the Third Man is attractive, witty and good company but he is involved in the black market which is watering down penicillin and thus causing the death of scores of very sick children.

    3) Slide 2: Lighting: Say something like…in our lighting design we deliberately endeavored to achieve a chiaroscuro effect which is a convention of noir thrillers…for example. You use a screen shot of Jason Locke which is effective, also include screen shots from “The Third Man” to strengthen your point.

    4) Slide 3: Focus on the question and avoid describing the purpose of aspects of mise-en-scene. Say something like or think about the importance of soundtrack to intensify suspense then upload examples, the shower scene in “Psycho”, or go to You Tube and search “Creepiest moment in Animal Kingdom” where the ambient sound contradicts the visuals and the growing menace/suspense. Note the lighting in this clip.

    5) Slide 3: Narrative Structure. Think about the linear narrative structure of films like Psycho, Animal Kingdom, Essex Boys…..say something like our film uses the convention of a linear narrative structure in thrillers such as……………so that the focus is on character and action rather than on mind games, for example “Memento” which has a reverse narrative structure which indicates the unreliability of memory.

    6) Slide 4: Re camera angles, we used conventions such as in order to build inter textual references into our film, for example…..

    7) Slide 5: Again respond more closely to the question….say something like or think about something like……during the editing process I decided to use a proverb which is a convention which Tarantino uses in………in order to indicate there is a quirky style to the film and that there will be black humor, For example in “Kill Bill 2” Tarantino’s villains are losers who the audience can fear and laugh at. ,For example Bill’s vanity with his bling jewelry and initialed handkerchief. Whilst our film is more sinister the inclusion of a proverb gives the film a contemporary and ironic edge…..

You need to focus much more on the question and not find yourself wandering into explaining the connotations of aspects of mise-en-scene. This is the catch in the question!
Level 3 but with revisions could be a strong Level 4.
