This is my analysis of the first case study: Once Upon A Time In America.

  1. Well done for identifying the splendid cinematography, particularly (as you say) composition, and of course lighting design. Your analysis is promising Emily in this proficient case study.
    1) Slide 1 Opening scene. Do not write analysis in 1st person using “I” or “we”, instead use a more sophisticated style for example: …….….the genre of the film is strongly established with the establishing close up shot of Eve’s profile as she enters her apartment straight after the title sequence. The use of chiaroscuro lighting combined with Eve’s stylish costume, suggesting the femme fatale archetype connotes that the film is a noir thriller……

    2) The use of “God bless America” is ironic as you have explained. The gang in the film are first generation Jewish immigrants as was Irving Berlin so this is a reference not only to the cultural roots of the gang but also the cultural roots of Irving Berlin.

    3) You say that Eve appears to be innocent as she turns on the lamp. The representation of Eve as a victim and In terms of genre and the conventions of the femme fatale archetype Eve is far from innocent. Fans of complex gangster thrillers will not read her as inoocent. Her painted nails, her stylish hat, her red lips and expensive pearls indicate she is the mistress of a gangster (in this case Noodles) and is far from innocence. But she evokes sympathy because she is not directly involved with the mob and she is seriously out numbered. Reading a review of the film would be useful. Try to avoid adjectives like innocent, instead say fragile.

    Keep the good work Emily.
